Investing in Skills for the Future of the Forest of Dean: How AccXel is Shaping Tomorrow’s Construction Workforce

The Forest of Dean has a proud heritage of craftsmanship, hard work, and innovation. Today, as the UK construction sector faces a growing skills shortage, this region is uniquely positioned to lead the way in preparing the next generation of builders, engineers, and construction managers. At AccXel, we’re proud to call the Forest of Dean home — and even prouder to be investing in its future.

Co-funded by KW Bell Group, a respected local construction business, AccXel is the UK’s first industry-led construction education centre. Both organisations are family-run, driven by a shared passion to support local people and create sustainable careers in the region. This close connection to the community ensures that everything we do is built with local needs, values, and opportunity in mind.

Built by Industry, for the Forest

AccXel is more than a training provider — it’s a centre of excellence created by those who know the industry best. With a vision brought to life through collaboration with local businesses and professionals, AccXel reflects the practical demands of the modern building site — and the future of the construction and education sectors.

Every tutor at AccXel brings direct site experience to the classroom, ensuring that learners gain practical, relevant knowledge that aligns with the realities of today’s construction environments — both locally and nationally.

A Career Ladder for Local Talent

We believe that skills training should be a lifelong journey, not a one-off course. That’s why we offer clear and structured pathways for people across the Forest of Dean — from school leavers starting at Level 2, to experienced professionals moving into management roles through our Level 4 programmes.

Our bespoke Skill STEP Programme goes even further, offering progression into Construction Management qualifications and unlocking leadership opportunities in the industry. Many of our apprentices return to us to continue learning — a true testament to the lasting value of our approach.

Supporting Women into Construction

We’re passionate about creating a more inclusive and diverse construction sector, right here in the Forest of Dean. At AccXel, over 60% of our team are women, including our Managing Director and Principal, Natalie King, who leads by example.

Through initiatives like Ladies Day and dedicated support networks, we’re challenging outdated stereotypes and empowering women of all ages to see construction as a career for life. Our mission is clear: to make sure everyone, regardless of gender or background, has a place in shaping the built environment.

Learning That Reflects the Real World

Located in the heart of the Forest of Dean, our state-of-the-art training centre features a Live Mock Construction Site, purpose-built to mirror real working conditions. Apprentices split their time between classroom learning and practical, hands-on experience — both on live sites and within our simulated environment.

This unique approach ensures learners are site-ready from day one, with the technical skills, adaptability, and confidence to excel.
